Rupesh and Ajanta’s Indian wedding at the Cleveland Renaissance

One of the hardest parts about shooting Rupesh and Ajanta’s wedding was trying to keep the number of blog images down to a reasonable number. With so much going on, and so many things to photograph, this blog post could go on an on for several pages. Even though the festivities officially began four or five days earlier, and were set to continue the following weekend in Texas, we were able to meet up with Ajanta and Rupesh for the climax of the wedding celebration; the baraat, ceremony, and the formal reception, all taking place at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Cleveland.

We were lucky to get the baraat in before all of Cleveland was pummeled by on heck of a thunderstorm, which we all got to enjoy from the safety of a hotel suite between the ceremony and reception. After the ceremony, and after everyone had changed into their evening attire, we had a chance to jump back outside for a few photos on Public Square before sky started to threaten again.

We were both very grateful for how welcoming Ajanta, Rupesh, and their families were to us. They made us feel quite at ease amongst the whirlwind of transitions and customs that were for the most part foreign to us.

Anita and Amar’s Indian wedding at La Centre

Anita and Amar’s wedding on Saturday was quite the experience. If there’s one thing for certain, it’s that the Indian culture knows how to celebrate. From the baraat and milni, to the dancing, bollywood, and the food, there was not a dull moment to be had. They even used fire as a central element in the ceremony. How can you go wrong with that!

Aside from the events, colors, and flavors, Anita and Amar where just awesome to be around. They made us feel more like friends then vendors, and while they didn’t have to, they always asked to make sure we had what we needed and were comfortable throughout the whole day. We broke our previous record in terms of number of images captured for one day, but I think we’ll keep that number on the down-low for now. We’re really looking forward to going through them all and putting together an awesome proof set for Anita and Amar.

The staff at La Centre was fantastic to work with. They even took the time to take me way up into a utility room that bad a Birdseye view of the reception room.

Umesh and Falguni’s Indian wedding at La Centre

This past Sunday I was asked by my friend Rob from RAD to second shoot an Indian wedding. I knew it would be a long day but probably also a colorful one. Vibrant, full of emotion, respectful of their elders, elaborate, caring, celebratory are just a few words to describe Umesh and Falguni wedding. They had the details of the day planned out very well and were such a joy to be around. I enjoyed working with some familiar faces such as the ladies from White Flower and Scott from Moonstruck and seeing another photographer in action.

Darshan and Raina’s wedding – Columbus

Last week I got a call from the Toronto based film and photo company called StillMotion asking to help them cover a very large Indian wedding taking place in Columbus. This sounded like a very interesting opportunity and since I rarely get to second shoot at weddings, I accepted. I had a great time working with their team and it was very interesting to see their ways of working with the subjects and how it differs from our ways.

The day started at 9:30 in the morning with the Bharat where the groom rides on a white horse while his family dances around him.

After the ceremony, both Darshan and Raina headed back to the Renaissance Hotel to change outfits, hair and makeup for the reception. I love this shot of Patrick from StillMotion getting a tight shot of Raina getting her makeup done.

The guys from StillMotion did some location scouting the day before and they found this crazy wall that had been painted a bright yellowish green. If that wasn’t enough, the cards parked in front of the wall were painted the same color as if the paint had ran right off the wall onto the cars. Amina from StillMotion appropriately dubbed this wall “the crazy.” As it turn out, the crazy was a perfect compliment to Raina’s saree.
